Marc van Roon (The Hague, 2 November 1967) is a pianist, composer, and educator from the Netherlands.

Biography[edit]

Marc van Roon is born in The Hague, The Netherlands, in the family of Wouter van Roon, musician, producer[1] and coordinator at the Dutch broadcasting company NOS [2], and sculptor Wibbine Telders. His younger brother is DJ and drummer Ruben van Roon. Marc van Roon studied jazz piano at the Royal Conservatory of The Hague with Frans Elsen and Rob van Kreeveld. In New York he studied with pianists Kenny Werner, Barry Harris and Richie Beirach.[3][4]

In 1992 his debut CD We Won't Forget was released. In December 1993 he performed with jazz trumpet player Clark Terry in Amsterdam.[5] In 1995 he was asked to become the pianist in the European Jazz Trio (EJT) with bassist Frans van der Hoeven en drummer Roy Dackus. EJT recorded with Charlie Mariano, Art Farmer and Jesse van Ruller. The trio won several awards in Japan. He performed with string quartet at the North Sea Jazz Festival.[6]

Van Roon CD's released several CD's with jazz saxophonist Dave Liebman.[7][8] He also collaborated with Ack van Rooyen, Michael Moore, Fay Claassen, Eric Vloeimans and Greg Osby. Van Roon composed for modern dance in collaboration with the Belgium born choregraher Annabelle Lopez Ochoa.[9] In 2006 van Roon became the regular pianist in the quartet of saxophonist Tineke Postma.[10][11]

Social interventions and educational activities[edit]

As educator, coach, mentor and curriculum developer van Roon has been connected to the Prince Claus Conservatoire, part of the Hanze University of Applied Sciences since 2001.[3][12]

As educator and research coach van Roon is connected to the Codarts University for the Arts in Rotterdam.[13] Together with colleagues of the conservatories in The Hague and the Iceland Academy of the Arts in Reykjavik van Roon co-created the new higher education music Master New Audience and Innovative Practice (NAIP)[14] and between 2007 and 2012 he was researcher in the research group Lifelong Learning in Music.[15]

Van Roon is also founder of Art in Rhythm. Between 1995 and 2009 Art in Rhythm designed and executed incentives, training programmes and social interventions for corporations and organisations.[16][17][18]

Van Roon collaborated with prof. dr. Peter Kruse en Joseph Jaworski.[19]. In 2018 van Roon obtained his academic MSc degree in social intervention at the LESI institute[20] and the Utrecht University.[21] Since 21 January 2020 van Roon is advisory member of the Dutch council for culture.[22]
