Marcella Zoia also popularly referred to by her nickname as Chair Girl (born 2000) is a Canadian social media personality and criminal charged with endangering life. In February 2019, at the age of 19, she caught wide media attention in Canada after performing a reckless publicity stunt by throwing a chair on the Gardiner Expressway while donning a police shirt.[1] She is an Instagram model with over 20,000 followers.
Life
She was enthusiastic about reaching and gaining popularity through making extra acting stunts. She recorded footage in her Instagram account where she was noticed to have thrown a chair from the 45th floor of the skyscraper balcony of a rented apartment in Toronto, which eventually fell on the Gardiner Expressway.[2] It was reported that she drank alcohol the day before, the night prior to the incident. The footage of her stunt, which was also caught on camera, went viral on social media platforms as it initially gained popularity after being uploaded to Facebook.[3] She soon rose to limelight and prominence and even got media attention in Toronto and was also nicknamed by the media as the Chair Girl. She also received backlash on social media, but she stated the video was made as a joke. However, her act was considered to be a serious offence and a lawsuit was filed against her despite no fatalities being reported. In November 2019, she pleaded guilty to mischief endangering life.[4][5]
Marcella also made a brief appearance in the 2019 musical video War of popular Canadian rapper Drake, which was released on December 24, 2019. However, the video featuring Marcella was removed from YouTube due to outcry and criticism of Marcella's act.[6][7] Meanwhile, Zoia posted some behind-the-scenes shots from the shoot on Instagram. Skudra and Drake issued Instagram posts addressing Zoia's appearance; while linking to a new version with her removed, Skudra stated, "Certain people we don't condone."[7]
In February 2020, she publicly apologized for her behaviour.[8] On July 21, 2020, via a teleconference, she was relieved and avoided a six-month jail term and was handed a fine of $2000 Canadian Dollars and 150 hours of community service along with two years probation.[9][10][11] Her jail sentence was delayed and postponed on numerous occasions due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[12][13]
