Marek Claassen
Marek Claassen (born 1964 in Bremerhaven, Germany) is a German internet entrepreneur and, together with Stine Albertsen, founder of the art database ArtFacts.
Biography
After Claassen completed training as a clerk at Berlin’s famous Galerie Brusberg (1989–92), he studied economics at Freie Universität Berlin. He finished his studies in 1995, creating a computer program that could visualize trends in the used car market. From early on, he had an interest in markets, art, and programming, which remains to this day.
Between 1990 and 1995, together with Professor Gerd Klemm, he developed GAP, a Gallery Administration Programme, one of the very first gallery administration software programs now commonly used by companies such as Artbutler,[1] Art-File,[2] or Art Systems.[3] In 1996, Claassen developed a website for the newly founded Berlin Gallery Association, which offered visitors virtual gallery visits.[4] Until 1998, he expanded his cooperation with the German Gallery Association[5] and the art fair company Art Cologne. In 1998, Marek Claassen was elected one of the most successful multimedia entrepreneurs[6] by the Commission of the European Community for his early internet applications. With his company “Claassen & Friends”,[7] he developed an automated database system for typesetting and printing catalogues in 1999; a first cooperation was done with Art Cologne to print exhibitor catalogues that same year. Finally, in 2001, together with Stine Albertsen, he founded ArtFacts and acts as its CEO.
