Marek Hnila (* May 31 1995, Šternberk) is a Czech writer, photographer, journalist, and publisher.

Founder of the cultural association of authors creating the so-called pure culture (culture of lartpourlartism). His works include the books Between You and Me, The Right Thing, Little Brother and Between Good and Evil.

Biography[edit]

He chose the field of secondary school and later university mainly because of the vision of easier employment. He was never brought up to believe that culture was a way to make a living. Already during his studies at the secondary school in Bruntál he wrote short stories. One of his first was a short story called The Price, which was later published as an e-book in cooperation with the Municipal Library in Prague. Within a month, The Price was among the 10 most popular titles offered at the Municipal Library of Prague in 2014.

In 2015, he wrote the short story Who Commands Off the Record. This philosophical-political allegory was read by the writer and publishing editor Vladimír Páral and he personally wrote a positive review of it.[1]

Despite his reclusive nature, he organized concerts, exhibitions and performances. Then, as a businessman, when he began to distinguish between the commercial and artistic worlds, he quit his studies, resigned from his job, and in 2017 founded a publishing house where he published his first printed book, Little Brother.

He took a very unconventional view of his publishing house and presented his vision to the general public in a vague way. He criticized the distributors of his books, whom he accused of belittling the meaning of the belles-lettres and thus the art in literature. He invested all his earnings in his other works and projects. During the year he also held several photographic exhibitions, but his interest slowly began to focus exclusively on literary work. He moved frequently and changed his second job. In 2018, he published a collection of three novellas and one short story titled Between Good and Evil. The publication of this book led to the consolidation of the idea of Hnila's work and the philosophy of his publishing house. Hnila has started collaborating with the Municipal Library of Prague again. In the way he published his books, he promoted the idea of literary education in the Czech Republic, pointing out that "Belles-lettres is for education, not for relaxation."

Work on his third book was interrupted by news of his grandfather's ill health. He returns to his family in Šternberk. At the same time, he gets an offer to work as a photographer at the Institute of Forensic Medicine. During the two and a half years he spent photographing forensic autopsies, he published the book The Right Thing, and greatly developed Between You and Me, a work inspired by his life, in which the character of his grandfather is one of the main characters. Before the book's completion in 2021, Marek's grandfather dies, as a result of which Marek moves back to Olomouc, where he finished his autobiographical novel.
