Marek Tesar is a Czechoslovak-born New Zealand academic, university administrator and educational philosopher. He is Dean of the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. His work focuses on reconceptualist early childhood education, posthumanist theories of childhood, and education policy.[1][2][3]
Career and research
Tesar earned a PhD in Education from the University of Auckland.[4] He worked at the University of Auckland as Head of School and Associate Dean International and founded the Centre for Global Childhoods.[5][6] In March 2025, he became Dean of Education at the University of Melbourne.[7]
His research examines early childhood policy, pedagogy, and curriculum. He is Editor-in-Chief of Policy Futures in Education (SAGE) and Educational Philosophy and Theory (Taylor & Francis).[5][8][9] He co-authored Theorising Posthuman Childhood Studies (Springer, 2020) with Karen Malone and Sonja Arndt.[10] With Yulida Pangastuti, he has written on postcolonial early childhood education in Indonesia.[11]
He is editor of two book series: New Directions in Philosophy of Education (Routledge),[12] and Children: Global Posthumanist Perspectives and Materialist Theories (Springer, 2017–present).[13]
In June 2024, Tesar wrote that New Zealand's budget underinvested in early childhood education compared to OECD countries such as Finland.[14][15]
He has served as President of PESA and Chair of the RECE Steering Committee.[5]
Awards and honors
Tesar's doctoral thesis received several awards in 2012 and 2013, including the Vice-Chancellor's Prize for Best Doctoral Thesis, the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Outstanding Qualitative Dissertation Award,[16] and the New Zealand Association for Research in Education (NZARE) Sutton-Smith Award for Best Doctoral Thesis.[17]
In 2018, he received the NZARE Judith Duncan Award for Research Excellence in Early Childhood Education.[18]
Tesar was elected a Fellow of the Philosophy of Education Society of Australasia (PESA) in 2023. He received the Bloch Distinguished Career Award from the Reconceptualizing Early Childhood Education society in 2025.[7]
