Margaret Edward Dorward (née Boyle; 5 May 1905 – 11 September 1995) was a Scottish mathematician educated at the University of St Andrews.[1]
Early life and education
Margaret Edward Boyle was born on 5 May 1905, in Kirkden Manse, Angus, Scotland, to father Rev John Boyle, and had two sisters. She finished her secondary education in 1921, becoming the school dux (valedictorian) at Forfar Academy, Angus.[1]
Boyle continued her education at the University of St Andrews. She was awarded the Simson Bursary of £25 for four years.[2][lower-alpha 1] She met Agnes Mudie, a fellow student of mathematics, who became a lifelong friend. Boyle graduated from St Andrews with an MA (a Scottish undergraduate degree, equivalent to a BA in other countries) in mathematics in 1925.[1]
Educator
Post graduation Boyle accepted an offer to teach at Dalkeith High School in Midlothian.[1][lower-alpha 2] In 1930, Boyle gave up teaching due to health reasons.[1][lower-alpha 3]
Marriage and children
Soon after leaving teaching, Boyle married David Gardyne Dorward in April 1931, who was the schoolmaster of Logie Pert School, in Montrose, North Angus. The couple had two children, the eldest being David Campbell Dorward, the BBC Radio Scotland music producer and well-known classical composer, and the youngest John Dorward.[1][3] In 1938, Boyle's husband David was appointed the schoolmaster of Monikie Primary School, so the couple and their children moved to Monikie near Dundee.[1] In 1971, her husband David passed away, and she moved to Edinburgh to live with her son David and his wife. Boyle died in September 1995.[1]
Notes
- ↑ Boyle started her studies there only 29 years after the University first opened its doors to female students in 1892.[2]
- ↑ She lived with Agnes Mudie at Buchanan Hostel, East Suffolk Road, Edinburgh. In June 1926, they both joined the Edinburgh Mathematical Society.[1] Boyle and Agnes Mudie frequently went to the St Andrews University Hall Association for reunions with her classmates, and Agnes Mudie became known as ‘Auntie Nancy’ to the family.[1]
- ↑ Boyle wrote to the secretary of the Edinburgh Mathematical Society to give up her membership: "I left Edinburgh several years ago owing to a breakdown in health. As I am not likely to take up mathematics again or be in the vicinity of Edinburgh, I regret that I must let my membership lapse."[1]
