MariNaomi is a comics artist and illustrator, fine artist, podcaster, video game producer, and spoken word performer. She is the founder of the Cartoonists of Color Database and the Queer Cartoonists Database. She is the author of five books of comics and is the cohost of the podcast Ask Bi Grlz. She is also an assistant localization producer at Sega for America.[1]
Early life
MariNaomi was born in Texas,[2] the daughter of a white father and a Japanese mother.[3] She grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area and quit high school during her sophomore year.[4] As a child she wanted to write novels, but Mary Fleener's story "The Jelly," in Twisted Sisters: A Collection of Bad Girl Art, inspired her to try writing her own autobiographical comics.[5] She published comics about her romantic and sexual misadventures in a handmade zine called Estrus.[6] The personal stories earned a cult following and led to the publication of her first book, Kiss and Tell: A Romantic Resume. Published by HarperPerennial in 2011, the book won a 2012 SPACE prize.[7]
Comics career
MariNaomi's comics have appeared in the anthologies I Saw You... and The Big Feminist BUT. She has contributed to the comics/zines Action Girl, Henry & Glenn Forever, and Razorcake, the latter of which features her comic strip "Asian Goth Punks Rule the World!". She considers her work to be "primarily true stories about compassion, death, and complicated relationships."[8]
In 2011, she began a monthly webcomic for the website the Rumpus. The column, "Smoke in Your Eyes," formed the basis for her 2014 book Dragon's Breath and Other True Stories.
In a 2013 essay for xoJane, MariNaomi wrote that she was sexually harassed onstage at a convention panel about queer comics.[9] She did not name her harasser, but New 52 comics writer Scott Lobdell identified himself in an apology posted to Comics Beat.[10]
Work at Sega
MariNaomi is an assistant localization producer for Sega. She told an interviewer in 2018: "For those who aren’t familiar with the process of localization, we basically took the Japanese games and made them into American games. There’s a lot of work involved in that, beyond the simple work of translation."[1] She worked extensively on the Sega Dreamcast game Seaman, as well as Sonic Adventure, Space Channel 5, and Jet Grind Radio.
Podcast
MariNaomi and author Myriam Gurba are hosts of Ask Bi Grlz, a "comedy-advice podcast" that debuted on October 9, 2017.[11] The pair met while on tour with the spoken word collective Sister Spit.[12]
Personal life
MariNaomi is bisexual.[13] She lives with her husband in California.
