Marianne Cope was born on January 23, 1838. She felt called to the religious life at a young age but due to family matters, it was delayed several years. When she turned 24 she became apart of the Sisters of St. Francis in New York.

Often she was criticized by her peers due to the acceptance of outcast patients. But from this, she became a respected individual in the Syracuse, New York Area.

After this Sister Marianne Cope and six others would head for Honolulu, Hawaii in 1883. They began to clean and attend to the 200 patients of the Kaka'ako Branch Hospital. Eventually, the hospital would be shut down due to a change of Government.
