Marie A. Chisholm-Burns (née Chisholm) is an American educator, university administrator and pharmacist who currently serves as Executive Vice President and Provost of Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU).[1][2] She is also the J.S. Reinschmidt Endowed Professor in the OHSU School of Medicine Department of Surgery. She was previously Dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center College of Pharmacy. Chisholm-Burns is also Founder and Director of the Medication Access Program, administered through the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy.[3]
Early Life and Education
Chisholm-Burns was born on Long Island, New York, where she spent her childhood and early adolescence. As a teenager, she and her parents, Arnold and Wylean Chisholm, moved to Monticello, Georgia. Chisholm-Burns has Bachelor of Science degrees in General Studies and Psychology from Georgia College & State University; Bachelor of Science in Pharmacy and Doctor of Pharmacy degrees from the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy; a Master of Public Health degree from Emory University; a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Memphis; and a Doctor of Philosophy degree from the University of South Dakota.[4][5][6] Chisholm-Burns completed a pharmacy practice residency at Piedmont Hospital and Mercer University Southern School of Pharmacy in Atlanta, Georgia.[4]
Career
Chisholm-Burns was a faculty member of the University of Georgia College of Pharmacy for 13 years.[6] She then became Head and Professor (tenured) of the Department of Pharmacy Practice and Science at the University of Arizona College of Pharmacy.[7] In 2012, she became Dean of the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC) College of Pharmacy.[8] Additionally, she held the title of Distinguished Professor in the UTHSC Colleges of Pharmacy and Medicine. In July 2022, Chisholm-Burns became Executive Vice President and Provost of Oregon Health & Science University.[1][2]
Chisholm-Burns is a member of several professional organizations. She currently serves on the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities Board of Commissions and American Society of Transplantation Board of Directors.[9][10] She is also the Board liaison for the American Society of Transplantation Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Access to Life Committee.[11] She previously served on the editorial board of the American Journal of Health-System Pharmacy.[12] She is a member of the National Academies of Practice (Pharmacy Academy).[13] Additionally, she served as a Commissioner on the State of Tennessee Education Recovery and Innovation Commission.[14]
Chisholm-Burns has published books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles; focus areas include transplantation, healthcare access, medication adherence, patient outcomes, effects of pharmacists on patient care, and the scholarship of teaching and learning.[15] She has received grant funding from organizations such as the National Institutes of Health.[16] She is the primary editor of textbooks including Pharmacotherapy Principles and Practice (six editions, seventh edition forthcoming) and Pharmacy Management, Leadership, Marketing, and Finance (two editions).[17][18]
Personal Life
Chisholm-Burns is married to John Fitzgerald Burns. They have one son, John Fitzgerald Burns, Jr.
