Marie Klaassen Newman (born 1964) is an American businesswoman and Democratic politician running for the U.S. Representative for Illinois's 3rd congressional district.[1] The district includes west and southwest suburbs of Chicago as far as the DuPage County border, as well as a portion of the southwest side of the city of Chicago itself. [3]

Early Life, Education and Career[edit]

Born in Beverly, Illinois and raised in Palos Park. Marie Newman attended Carl Sandburg High School . [4] Marie's maternal grandfather was a union carpenter and union airline mechanic . Marie's father, both grandfathers and several uncles served in the Army and Marines.

To cover her tuition at Marquette University and then University of Wisconsin-Madison, Marie worked her way through college, cleaning and working retail. Newman earned a bachelors in Journalism from University of Wisconsin  will holding down five internships throughout her tenure.

Newman worked her way up to become a partner at corporate marketing agency and later left to start her own successful consulting business.[4]

When one of Newman's children was severely bullied in school, she founded a national non-profit program called “Team Up To Stop Bullying” to address the problem—ultimately expanding it nationwide. Marie worked directly with state and federal legislators to make anti-bullying policies a priority [1]and wrote a book designed to provide solutions for both parents and schools that is in use across the country. Marie has also served as a state and national advocate for health care rights, income equality, LGBTQ+ rights, and common-sense gun safety. [4]

2018 Campaign[edit]

In early summer of 2017, Marie Newman launched a campaign to primary House Representative Dan Lipinski in the IL 3rd District. Lipinski has represented the district since 2004, when his father Bill Lipinski announced his retirement after the 2004 primary and put Dan's name into the general ballot in his stead, giving Dan an unchallenged run into Congress. After witnessing the wave of political movement within the district in response to the 2016 General election, Newman sought to replace Lipinski with an agenda focused on advocating for a higher minimum wage, holisitic job creation and affordable childcare.[1]The race gained national attention during a heated 2018 midterm that looked to be a referendum on the 2016 General Election. Marie received a lot of support from grassroots movements and progressive groups including, NARAL-Pro-Choice, Human Rights Campaign, MoveOn.org, [5] and US Senators Bernie Sanders and Kirsten Gillibrand to name a few.[6]

The race was heavily contested and came down to wire on election night, with the results too close to call around midnight. Leading up to the election, Lipinski received an influx of support from No Labels and Susan B. Anthony List, which sponsored attack ads against Marie Newman.[6]The district was decided by just over 2000 votes, with Dan Lipinski winning 51% of the vote to Marie's 49%. [7]

Primary Results[edit]

Party Candidate Votes %
Democratic Dan Lipinski (incumbent) 48,675 51.1
Democratic Marie Newman 46,530 48.9
Vote Totals 95,205 100

Despite the loss, the race showed the growing momentum for progressive minded politicians. Marie Newman did not dismiss the idea of running again in 2020.[7]

2020 Campaign[edit]

Newman announced her second run for Congress on April 16th, 2019, citing the need for the people of IL 3rd having a representative that votes closer with Democratic Values than someone who votes closer to President Trump's conservative legislation.[8]

Upon her announcement, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee announced that they would be supporting incumbents facing primary challenges by blacklisting vendors who decide to work with insurgent challengers. The announcement caused Marie's campaign to lose consultant support including communication groups, mailers and pollster's.[9]

In spite of the DCCC blacklist, Marie received endorsements from progressive groups who were seeking to unseat an anti-immigrant, anti-healthcare for all, anti-abortion and LGBTQ democrat. EMILY's List, MoveOn, NARAL Pro-Choice America, Planned Parenthood Action Fund, the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, and Democracy for America all announced their support for Newman on May 6th, 2019. Senator Kirsten Gillibrand became the first Presidential hopeful to endorse Marie Newman. [10] Jay Inslee, Governor of Washington and Bernie Sanders, Senator of Vermont have endorsed Newman's 2020 race as well.[11]
