Princess Maria, Baroness Ritonja (July 10, 1879 – January 11, 1961) was the illegitimate daughter of King Nicholas I of Montenegro and Countess Sofia Attems.

Early life

She was the daughter of Countess Sophie Attems (born 1862), whose husband was Count Alfred Attems (born 1858), an Austrian noble. She was born in Graz, Austria, at Eggenberg Palace.

Marriage and issue

In 1902, she married Franz Freiher Ritonja (born 1876) from Slovenia. They had two daughters:

  • Baroness Elizabeth Ritonja (married Anton Bratusha)
  • Baroness Anne Ritonja (1900-1993). She was mistress of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. In 1931, she became Her Highness Countess Anne of Yugoslavia, but after Alexander's assassination in Paris, her title and style were deleted. In 1935, her title was recovered, with no styles (Countess Anne Ritonja). She never married.

Before her mother died, she told her that:

Your father was not Alfred, you are the daughter of a King, the King of Montenegro, Your Royal Highness.

— Countess Sophie Attems, 1948
