Princess Maria, Baroness Ritonja (July 10, 1879 – January 11, 1961) was illegitimate daughter of King Nicholas I of Montenegro and Countess Sofia Attems.
Early life[edit]
She was the daughter of Countess Sophie Attems (born 1862), whose husband was Count Alfred Attems (born 1858), Austrian noble. She was born in Graz, Austria at Eggenberg Palace.
Marriage and issues[edit]
In 1902 she had married with Franz Freiher Ritonja (born 1876) from Slovenia. They have two daughters:
- Baroness Elizabeth Ritonja (married with Anton Bratusha)
- Baroness Anne Ritonja (1900-1993) She was mistress of King Alexander I of Yugoslavia. In 1931 she became Her Highness Countess Anne of Yugoslavia, but after Alexander assassination in Paris her title and style was deleted. In 1935 was her title recovered, with no styles (Countess Anne Ritonja). She never married.
Before her mother died she told her that:
Your father was not Alfred, you are daughter of King, King of Montenegro, Your Royal Highness.
