Marin Zhelyazkov Bachvarov, later known as Marin Bachevarov, was a Bulgarian astronomer and university lecturer, the first professor of astronomy at Sofia University and in Bulgaria. From 1883 to 1926 he carried out meteorological and magnetic observations in Sofia.[1]
Biography
He was born on 1 October 1859 in Gorna Oryahovitsa. He received a scholarship from the Bulgarian government to study astronomy at the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics of Moscow State University, graduating in 1884. On 1 February 1887 he established the meteorological service in Bulgaria by founding the first meteorological station in Sofia. In the spring of 1892 he began lecturing in astronomy at the Department of Astronomy he founded at Sofia University, dividing the general astronomy course into four separate courses — spherical astronomy, practical astronomy, celestial mechanics, and astrophysics. In 1893 he was elected the first professor of astronomy in Bulgaria.[1] At his initiative, construction of the Sofia University Astronomical Observatory began in 1892, with the building completed in 1894. In 1897 he acquired the first modern observational astronomical instrument in Bulgaria — a 6-inch (15.2 cm) refractor. In the academic years 1895/1896 and 1904/1905 he served as Rector of Sofia University. He was Dean of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics in the academic years 1897/1898, 1901/1902, 1904/1905, 1911/1912, and 1914/1915.[2] From 1904 he consolidated the teaching of astronomy into two courses — spherical and practical astronomy, and theoretical astronomy. In 1910 he founded the Astronomical Institute.[1]
He died on 23 November 1926 in Sofia.[1]
Name
His family name was originally Bachvarov. It is believed he changed it to Bachevarov due to a love story, and subsequently kept the new name.[3]
Legacy
A street in the Vitosha neighbourhood of Sofia is named after Marin Bachevarov.
