Marin Minamiya
Marin Minamiya (December 20, 1996) is a Japanese female mountaineer and explorer. Marin is the youngest Asian person to complete both the Bass and Messner lists' Seven Summits challenge. Marin is the youngest Japanese person to climb 8000m peaks, making her the youngest Japanese person to climb Mt. Everest. In 2017, Marin became the youngest person in the world to complete the Explorer's Grand Slam by climbing the seven summits and reaching both the North and South poles.
Marin graduated from Tokyo Gakugei University International Secondary School and studied at Waseda University, in the faculty of Political Science and Economics where she received Waseda University's President Award. In 2021, Marin transferred to Columbia University.
Marin is an ambassador of National Holiday 'Mountain Day', and NPO 'Mirai no Mori'.
Early Life and Education
Marin Minamiya is currently a student at Columbia University but when she was only 18 months old she moved from Japan to live overseas due to her father’s work where she lived abroad for many years. During this time, she lived in Malaysia, China (Dalian & Shanghai) and Hong Kong. She has spent most of her life abroad and didn’t return to Japan until she was a high school senior.
When Marin was 19 years old and a student at Waseda University, she became the youngest Japanese person to summit Mount Everest. She also climbed all of the highest peaks in 7 continents and became the youngest Asian person to hold the ‘7 Summits’ record. She even went further and reached both the North and South Poles giving her the title as the youngest person in the world to complete the ‘Explorers Grand Slam’. Prior to these successes, she experienced a traumatizing mountaineering accident in Japan but didn’t let that experience hinder her ability in achieving her goal..
Despite her achievements, Marin tries not to define herself solely as a “Mountaineer/Alpinist”. She was taught by a respected mentor who believed that, “the past does not determine the present, but the present and future hold power to define the past.”
