Maritza Chan Valverde is a Costa Rican diplomat,[1][2][3][4] scholar,[5][6], and activist.[7][2][8] She currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Costa Rica to the United Nations.[9][10] Before that, she served as Deputy Permanent Ambassador of Costa Rica to the United Nations as deputy representative for Ambassador Rodrigo Alberto Carazo Zeledón.[11][3][1]

Chan's work and diplomacy includes work on the United Nations First Committee (Disarmament, Peace and International Security) issues.[12][13] In this capacity, Chan served as the lead negotiator for Costa Rica on the Arms Trade Treaty. [12] Chan has written and spoken on nuclear disarmament, civil society participation, and the Women, Peace and Security agenda and disarmament as a feminist topic.[3][14][7][1][4][15][16][17][10]

In 2020, Chan was recognized as a "Force of Change" for her disarmament experience by the United Nations Regional Centre for Peace, Disarmament, and Development in Latin America and the Caribbean.[3]

Chan has represented Costa Rica in the annual negotiations on the Revitalization of the General Assembly.[18][4]
