Marius Bar (15 April 1862, in Marseille – 1930, in Toulon) was a French photographer specialising in maritime and naval subjects. He was the founder of the Marius Bar agency, which carried on his work after his death.
Biography
Marius Bar was a pupil to Pélissier and Lina Bonnot.
He worked with fellow photographer Paul Couadou.
He worked around Toulon, where he opened a photographic business in 1886,[1] producing photos of views, maritime subjects, and everyday life. His work on warships included not only pictures of French naval vessels but also some foreign naval vessels that visited Toulon. Among French naval vessels, Bar was particularly interested in those undergoing speed trials.[2]
During his career, Bar was associated with a number of other artists, such as Victor Gensolen, Paulin Bertrand, poets François Armagnin and Théodore Botrel, and writer Jean Aicard.[3]
The brothers Etienne and Antoine Neurdein, perhaps better known for their Orientalist photography, assisted Marius Bar when he was the official photographer for the Paris Exposition of 1900.[4]
