Mark Budman is a foreign-born, but writing in English, American fiction writer.[1][2]
Born in Moldova, he spent his childhood in Russia. He was published in Russia, but switched to English upon his emigration to the US in 1980. He is a recognized expert in flash fiction[3][4][5][6]. He's the author of a novel-in-flashes "My Life at First Try," a co-editor of several flash fiction anthologies, and an editor/publisher of a flash fiction magazine Vestal Review since 2000.
"Mark Budman’s My Life at First Try straddles the space between the short story cycle tradition of writers like Sherwood Anderson, James Joyce, and Ernest Hemingway, and the novel, with its essential unities of character and plot."[7]
He judged several writing competitions such as 2009 Press 53 Open Awards writing contest. He is currently a short story judge at Hampton Roads Writers 9th Annual Conference.
The quote from his novel "My Life at First Try” can describe him as well: “Writing in a second language is supposed to be a torture. But I enjoy it. Maybe I’m a masochist. Maybe I need to see a shrink. It could be fun. She would put me on a couch and ask if my mother liked to communicate with me in writing.” [8]
Mark is also an engineer in the field of microelectronics and inventor with 11 US patents.
