Mark Cowden is a New Zealand artist, known for contemporary lenticular art works. His works are exhibited throughout New Zealand and Australia.[1]
Early life and career
Cowden was born in Christchurch in 1956 and raised in the South Island of New Zealand [2]. He has lived in Dunedin, New Zealand, since the late 1970s.
Cowden spent more than twenty years working in corporate finance. He flew as a commercial pilot and worked in graphic design, and advertising.[1][2] He ran his own advertising agency and later served as the brand and marketing manager for the Dunedin-based fireplace manufacturing company, Escea.[1][3] He achieved an MBA from Massey University in 1997.
Cowden has credited his background in advertising and graphic design as significant influences on his art. His involvement in the promotion of a 1990s Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum touring exhibition at the Dunedin Public Art Gallery, heavily informed his design philosophy.[1]
Style and technique
Cowden specializes in a form of optical and kinetic art, he describes as "multiplanes". Cowden’s interest in lenticular art was strongly influenced by the works of Yaacov Agam which he first saw at the Pompidou Centre in Paris.[1]
Cowden uses graphic images printed on heavy paper, then folded into a concertina like structure and mounted. In contrast to traditional lenticular art, which often relies on fine-resolution imagery, viewed through plastic lenticular lenses.
His abstract and geometric compositions change visually, depending on the physical angle from which the audience views them. Movement and changing perspective is required to fully experience the artwork.[1][4] His production pieces are constructed, using long-life, archival-quality, giclée inks, paper and board.[1][5]

Cowden transitioned to working as a full-time fine artist in the late 2010s and has since exhibited across New Zealand galleries.[1][2]
