Mark Ferguson is a Canadian jazz trombonist, pianist, composer, arranger, and educator based in Ottawa, Ontario. Over a multi-decade career, he has performed with nationally recognized Canadian ensembles and has been the subject of reviews and features in publications including CBC Music, All About Jazz, Jazz Journal, Exclaim!, North Country Public Radio, and LatinJazzNet.[1][2][3][4][5][6]
Career
Collaborations
Ferguson collaborated with vocalist Renée Yoxon on the album Here We Go Again (2013), which was reviewed in All About Jazz and covered by North Country Public Radio.[2][5] He has also recorded and performed with the Canadian ensemble Manteca, whose album The Twelfth of Never was reviewed in Jazz Journal.[3]
His playing has also been cited in Canadian music press; for example, Exclaim! noted his contributions as a sideman on nationally released projects,[4] while LatinJazzNet highlighted his work with the Ottawa Latin Jazz Orchestra.[6] The Canadian Jazz Archive Online includes a biographical entry on Ferguson's career.[7]
As leader
In 2015, Ferguson released his first album as a leader, The Next Chapter. The record was highlighted by CBC Music as one of the "10 Outstanding Canadian Jazz Albums of 2015," praised as a "highly successful debut" with "lots of personality."[1] The album featured Ferguson on both trombone and piano, with John Geggie (bass), Jeff Asselin (drums), and Scott Latham (vibraphone).
Composition and arranging
Ferguson has composed music for Canadian television series including Life & Times, Cottage Country, and On the Road Again. His work has also appeared in the children's program Toy Castle and in advertising campaigns.[8]
Teaching
He has taught jazz performance and arranging at Carleton University for over three decades.[8]
