Mark Larson Hinshaw, FAIA, FAICP, was born in Glendale California, August 17, 1947. Hinshaw graduated summa cum laude with a Bachelors of Architecture, University of Okalahoma 1970, and a Masters of Urban Planning in 1972, Hunters College, NYC. He served in the United States Airforce as a 1st Lieutenant from 1972-1975 at Elmendorf Airforce Base.

Hinshaw's body of work in the fields of architecture, urban planning & journalism are referenced throughout the United States in online publications[1], by cities[2], in educational programs[3], by conservation groups [4][5] and by other architects.[6][7][8]

In 1994, after serving as the President of the American Institute of Architects from 1992-1993,[9] he was recognized with a national award by the American Institute of Architecture, and elected to the AIA College of Fellows, noting his "influential carreer spanning architecture, urban planning and journalism."[10]

Hinshaw subsequently recieved another national award and was elected to the College of Fellows for the American Institute of Certified Planners in 2007 and is noted as having "illuminated trends and directions in design".[11]

Hishaw is known for being a proponent of a number of innovative concepts throughout his career. These included the walkability of cities[12], the slow shrinking of suburbia[13], and the revitalization of urban centers[14]. These concepts are consistent in his work over several decades, before they became more popular in recent years. [15][16]

From 2015-2018 Hinshaw directed the urban design elements of the Yesler Terrace redevelopement project with the Seattle Housing Authority.[17][18], which is considered by many to be a model of progressive design and has received a number of awards.[19][20][21]

Hinshaw authored a column in the Seattle Times from 1991-2003[22], has published articles in a number of architecture magazines,[23] and is interviewed by architectural publications for his expertise.[24] Hinshaw has authored several columns in Crosscut Magazine [25] between 2015-2018 before his retirement in 2018. He has been widely quoted in a variety of local, national and international media, including weekly newspapers[26], The Daily Journal of Commerce,[27][28] the Seattle Times and the New York Times[29], among others.

Currently, Hinshaw has retired and is living in a small hilltown in Italy with his wife.[30].
