Mark James Sorell (born 4 December 1965) is an Australian cricket coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of the Queensland Fire and the Brisbane Heat in the Women's Big Bash League (WBBL). Sorell previously served as head coach of the Australia women's national cricket team and the South Australia men's team.[1][2]
Early Life and Playing Career
Sorell was born in North Adelaide, South Australia. A right-handed batter and right-arm off-spin bowler, he played as a wicketkeeper-batter. Although he did not represent South Australia at the senior state level, he played for the South Australia Second XI and spent time playing league cricket in Lancashire, England. He also played 12 seasons with the Salisbury District Cricket Club in Adelaide.[1]
Coaching Career
Australia Women's National Team
In 2005, Sorell was appointed head coach of the Australia women's national cricket team. During his tenure from 2005 to 2007, the team achieved significant success, winning 17 out of 21 One Day Internationals (ODIs).[2][3]
South Australia Men's Team
In 2007, Sorell became head coach of the South Australia men's cricket team, taking over from Wayne Phillips. He aimed to implement a "back-to-basics" approach to improve the team's performance after a period of underachievement.[1]
Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat
After serving as an assistant coach with the Queensland Fire and Brisbane Heat, and being part of the Queensland Cricket pathways system for over five years, Sorell was appointed head coach of both teams in June 2024, succeeding Ashley Noffke.[4]
Under his leadership, both teams reached multiple finals in the 2024–25 season. The Brisbane Heat reached the finals of the WBBL and the inaugural T20 Spring Challenge, while the Queensland Fire secured a spot in the Women's National Cricket League (WNCL) final. In recognition of his contributions, Sorell's contract was extended for two more seasons in February 2025.[2]
