Mark Tregellas is an Australian police officer noted for his service with Victoria Police and his involvement in community safety initiatives. He has also been active in promoting recognition for acts of bravery in Australia.

Early life and education

Details about Tregellas's early life and education have not been widely published. He grew up in Syndal, Victoria, Australia. He was active in athletics[1] and was educated at Syndal High School from 1974-1978, then Swinburne University of Technology from 1978-1979.[citation needed] He worked as an Arborist with Ivan Earl and Associates from 1979-1980 before leaving Australia to travel.[citation needed]

Career

Returning in 1984 Tregellas enlisted in the Australian Army Reserve 1st Commando Regiment[2][3] where he served for four years. He later joined the Mallacoota Sub-Branch of the Returned and Services league of Australia.[4]

Tregellas served as a member of Victoria Police, where he worked in a range of operational duties. During his career, he was involved in front-line policing and emergency response.[citation needed]

He has spoken publicly about the risks faced by first responders and the importance of adequate recognition for acts of courage performed by police and civilians alike.[citation needed]

Bravery awards and recognition

For his service and bravery, Tregellas became the third Victorian Police officer to receive the Royal Humane Society of Australasia's Clarke Silver Medal for Bravery.[5] Under the Australian Honours and Awards system he received a Commendation for Brave Conduct in 2016[6] and 2019.[7] Following the 2019–2020 Black Summer bush fires that devastated Mallacoota, he worked to support recovery and helped establish a community coordination platform that was awarded the Resilient Australia Awards community category.[8][9] In June 2024 he published his memoir "Backup is Three Hours Away".[10][11]

Later activities

Beyond policing, Tregellas has been engaged in writing, public speaking, and supporting humanitarian and community safety organisations.[citation needed] He has been an advocate for public awareness of Australian bravery awards, particularly the work of the Royal Humane Society of Australasia and the Australian Bravery Association.[citation needed]He has emphasised the role of such honours in fostering community values and encouraging acts of selflessness[citation needed]
