Markets.com is an online trading broker and the retail brokerage arm of Finalto Group. The company provides online trading using the electronic trading platform MetaTrader 4, MetaTrader 5, and a mobile app on Android and iOS for trading on the foreign exchange, commodity, cryptocurrency, and stock markets (both indices and individual stocks), as well as ETFs and bonds through Contracts for Difference (CFDs). In the UK, Markets.com also offers spread bets along with CFDs.

The Markets.com brand is operated by a number of regulated entities within the Finalto Group that facilitate its global reach. The brand is operated by its 6 companies which are individually regulated by the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) in the UK, the Cyprus Securities and Exchange Commission (CySEC) in Cyprus, the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) in South Africa, the Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) in Australia, as well as the British Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission (BVI FSC) in the British Virgin Islands and Financial Service Authority (FSA) in St. Vincent and the Grenadines for global clients.

Markets.com offers web-based and mobile trading with leverage up to 1:300.[1] Clients in Europe and UK are subject to ESMA regulations that limit leverage to a maximum of 1:30 and clients in Australia are limited to a maximum of 1:30 leverage for forex trades, 1:5 for shares and 1:10 for cryptocurrency trades following an intervention order from ASIC in 2021.[2] [3]

History[edit]

The company began as GFC Markets in 2008, acquiring its first licenses from CySEC and the FCA in the same year. It rebranded to Markets.com in 2010 following a merger between GFC Markets' owner Safecap Investments Limited and TradeFX, a software developer for forex and CFD operators.[4]

In 2009, Markets.com entered the European market by starting operations in Italy, later expanding to include Australia and Mexico. By 2013, the platform reached its first milestone of 1 million users.

In 2014, Markets.com launched its mobile app for both Android and iOS. The user base reached 2 million in 2015. A year later, the company secured its third license after being officially recognized by the FSCA (then called the Financial Services Board) in South Africa.

By 2017, the user base had grown to 3 million. 2018 saw Markets.com obtain two new licenses from ASIC in Australia and the FSC in the British Virgin Islands. The company opened an office in Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2020. [5]

In 2022, Markets.com reached another milestone with 4 million users. The following year, in 2023, it received authorization from the FSA in St. Vincent and the Grenadines.

Stavros Anastasiou was appointed as CEO of Markets.com in June 2023.[6][7] Dany Mawas was named South Africa CEO in January 2024.[8]

Operations[edit]

Platforms[edit]

While offering accounts for the MT4 and MT5 platforms, Markets.com has operated its own proprietary CFD trading platform since 2015.[9] The company also has its own app for Android and iOS (rebranded and launched in 2014).
