Markt (Alsfeld)
Markt is the main square of the historic center of Alsfeld, Hesse, Germany.
It is located in front of the Rathaus building, seat of the Alsfeld city administration since the 15th century. As the site of numerous events, trade fairs and Christmas markets, the square is the historic heart of the medieval Altstadt and today a popular tourist destination, it is regarded as one of Europe's greatest medieval squares.

History
As a square without a church, the market was designed as a purely political center and is located southwest of the church square with the Walpurgiskirche.
The open site was a marketplace established before the thirteenth century.
With the construction of the new town hall, the impetus for an architectural design of the square was given. Together with the wedding house and the wine house, it forms the trilogy from the heyday of the city. Other buildings include the Stumpf house, the pharmacy at the town hall and the Bücking house. 1883-1885 the inn "Zum Schwanen" on the market was demolished and replaced by a hotel of the same name in neo-Gothic style.
Events
Many events take place at the market, including those for everyday needs, as well as those of a purely festive nature. Including the Alsfeld weekly market and the after-work market. The oldest event is the annual Whitsun market, which first took place on the square in 1545. From 1954 to 2008, the Alsfeld Academic Morning Pint was held.
