Markus Hohenfellner (* September 1958 in Vienna) is an Austrian physician, urologist and university lecturer.
Life and Career[edit]
After graduating from high school in 1977 in Schondorf, Markus Hohenfellner studied medicine in Innsbruck until 1983 with a stay abroad in 1980/81 at the University of London and the University of Oxford.[1]
After two and a half years of general surgical training and two and a half years of translational nephrological research at the Physiological Institute of the University of Munich, he began his urological residency at the Department of Urology of the University of Witten-Herdecke Wuppertal in 1988. In 1993 he became a specialist in urology and in 1994 a specialist in special urological surgery.
In 1990/91, Hohenfellner was a fellow at the UC San Francisco Urological University Hospital. The scientific and clinical work he performed there was the main basis for his habilitation in 1994[2]. In the same year, he became a senior physician at the Urological University Hospital in Wuppertal.[3] Since 1997, he has worked as a senior consultant at the Department of Urology at the University of Mainz.
Hohenfellner has been Medical Director of the Urological University Hospital Heidelberg since October 1, 2003, succeeding Gerd Staehler.[4]
Services[edit]
Hohenfellner's scientific and clinical focus is on urological oncology and tumor surgery, minimally invasive urology including the Da Vinci Surgical System and reconstructive urology. Under his responsibility, the Urological Heidelberg University today covers the entire spectrum of modern urology.
Society memberships[edit]
Hohenfellner is a member of several national and international professional societies including: American Urological Association, American Spinal Injury Association, Deutsche Gesellschaft für Urologie, Deutsch-Japanische Konföderation für Urologie, Deutsche Transplantationsgesellschaft, Forum Urodynamicum, European Association of Urology, European Intra-Renal Surgery Society, Österreichische Gesellschaft für Urologie, Société Internationale d'Urologie, Urologic Research Society.
He is author or co-author of numerous scientific publications and editor of three urological scientific books. He has also received scientific awards from various national and international urological societies, including the European Thesis Award - the prize for the best postdoctoral thesis from the European Association of Urology - and the Maximilian Nitze Prize - the highest scientific award from the German Society of Urology.
Professional activities[edit]
Dr. Hohenfellner serves in several various medical societies on an honorary basis. In 2008/2009, for example, he was president of the Deutsche Kontinenz Gesellschaft and in this capacity organized the 21st annual congress.[5]
For the European Association of Urology he founded the guideline committee "Urological Trauma" and was responsible for the same topic for the guideline committee of the German Society of Urology (DGU). From 2002 to 2020 he represented the DGU in the S3 guideline committee "Polytrauma" of the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Unfallchirurgie[6]. Also within the DGU, he leads (as spokesperson) the Working Group of Urological Chairs[7] and the Working Group on Surgical Techniques[8] For the Stiftung Deutsche Krebshilfe, Hohenfellner worked for 10 years on a voluntary basis as a member of the expert committee "Care Measures and Research", in particular also with a focus on biomaterial banks and prostate carcinoma.[9]
In 2015, Hohenfellner implemented Semi-Live, a format of scientific communication of surgical techniques that is now supported by national[10] and international societies.[11]
Hohenfellner is strongly committed to international urological cooperation and understanding, e.g. as honorary member of the New York Section of the American Society of Urology and as co-president of the Chinese-German Society of Urology.
The Urological University Hospital has been documenting all inpatient oncological patients prospectively and continuously since 1992. Under the direction of Hohenfellner and with the generous support of the Dietmar Hopp Foundation, it was possible to secure this data and transfer it to a modern and web-based database (DATA 5.0) in order to apply it sustainably in digitalized medicine in terms of early detection diagnoses and therapeutic approaches.[12]
In addition to medical-scientific and clinical tasks, Hohenfellner supervises highly complex consortial projects funded by the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection, which advance digitalization, in particular the development and implementation of AI applications, in areas of medicine (CLINIC 5.1 and OP 4.1).
Philanthropy[edit]
Dr. Hohenfellner is chairman of the board of the Europäische Stiftung für Urologie (EFU). The foundation is primarily involved in the continuing education of physicians from developing countries, as well as for cancer research.
