Markus Scholler
Markus Scholler (born August 10, 1961, in Stuttgart) is a German mycologist whose primary research interests lie in the taxonomy, phylogeny, ecology, epidemiology, and floristic history of fungi, with a particular focus on obligate phytoparasitic microfungi—especially rust fungi (Pucciniales). He serves as the Curator of Mycology and Phycology at the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe.[1]
Early Years Markus Scholler was born in 1961 to probation officer Karl-August Scholler and his wife Katharina (née Bernhard). He grew up in Sulzbach an der Murr before the family moved to Sindelfingen in 1964; even as a schoolboy, he collected and sold mushrooms.
Education and Career Beginning in 1983, Scholler studied biology at the Institute of Plant Geography and Systematic Botany at the Free University of Berlin[2] (earning his diploma in 1990). He supported himself by collecting and preparing herbarium specimens of macrofungi and by working as a student assistant at the Institute of Genetics.

Since 2002, Scholler has been the Curator of Mycology and Phycology at the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe[3], overseeing a collection of over 115,000 fungal and 7,000 algal specimens. Scholler initially focused on the Erysiphales, Pucciniales, and Ustilaginales in northern Germany. While at Purdue, he gained international recognition, particularly for his work on the Pucciniales. Scholler is responsible for documenting a large number of fungal species—especially parasitic fungi—in Germany.
The taxonomy and ecology of rust fungi remain a primary research focus for Scholler. Current work on rust fungus barcoding centers on species within the genera *Melampsora*, *Coleosporium*, and *Uromyces*, as well as the *Puccinia coronata* complex. Scholler has described over 100 fungal species new to science and authored numerous scientific publications[4]. His first newly described species, *Puccinia kreiselii[5]*, honors his mentor, Hanns Kreisel. Kreisel was a student of Werner Rothmaler, who in turn studied under Karl von Goebel; this lineage places Scholler in the direct academic succession of Anton de Bary, under whom Goebel completed his dissertation.
Scholler currently concentrates his work primarily on the fungal and algal flora of the Karlsruhe region[6], the Black Forest[7], and the Allgäu. Through his research, he has documented the northernmost[8] and southernmost fungal occurrences in Germany.
Scholler serves on the research advisory board of the German Mycological Society[9] and the editorial board of Mycological Progress[10]; he is also an expert on mushroom poisoning for the Freiburg Poison Information Center and the author of numerous articles in scientific journals and books.
Personal Life Scholler has been married to mycologist Annemarthe Rubner since 1994 and has two sons.
