Martin W. Angler (born 1982) is an Italian science journalist and author. In 2024 he was an ABSW award finalist for his Aeon article on prolonged grief disorder.[1][2]. In 2024, his article won a commendation by the awards committee of TheMHS Learning Network[3].
He is the author of two books: Science Journalism: an introduction (2017, Routledge)[4] and Telling Science Stories (2020, Routledge)[5][6]. Science Journalism: an introduction has been translated to Serbian[7] and Chinese[8]. Angler also published two German books, Journalistische Praxis: Science Blogging (2021, Springer)[9] and Journalistische Praxis: Science Storytelling (2020, Springer)[10], the latter of which has been translated to English[11].
Education
Martin W. Angler was born on 6 January 1982, in Italy.
Angler was awarded a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science from Free University of Bolzano[12] in 2006. He completed postgraduate study at Edinburgh Napier University, where in 2015 he was awarded a Master of Arts degree with distinction in journalism. Angler earned a PGCert in project management from the University of Salzburg in 2011, which he also completed with distinction.
Career
Angler writes on the environment, energy, medicine and psychology. His work has been published by Aeon[13], the BBC[14], Scientific American (Blogs)[15], GEO[16], Neue Zürcher Zeitung[17], NZZ Folio[18], Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung[19], Süddeutsche Zeitung[20][21][22], SPIEGEL Online[23], ZEIT Online[24], and the European Science Media Hub[25].
During the first phase of the COVID-19 pandemic, he debunked science myths in various Italian media outlets [26][27]. After his debunking of Covid-19 myths on the Italian online news portal "Salto"[28][29] and for his public criticism, claiming that the editors would not sufficiently moderate their social channels while exposing their authors, he received backlash from Salto's then editor-in-chief[30]. He also debunked COVID-19 myths conveyed by health professionals for the German-language media outlet "Neue Südtiroler Tageszeitung"[31], drawing rebuttals by local health professionals. Angler has been repeatedly interviewed by national news broadcaster RAI on topics like fake news, the COVID-19 pandemic and technology[32][33][26][34].
In 2015 he completed a work experience internship at BBC Science Focus magazine in Bristol under then editor-in-chief Graham Waghorn. Since then, Angler works as a freelance author for German, Swiss and English outlets, and appeared as a speaker at science communication conferences[35]. He is the editor-in-chief of Eurac Science Blogs, a scientific blog network at Eurac Research in Bolzano, Italy[36]. His writing has been described as "excellent, so personal, written beautifully with such strong narrative, but also really deeply researched and full of detail and explanation"[37] by the Association of British Science Writers.
Personal life
According to his own account, Angler has contracted Long Covid and ME/CFS in 2023, but continues to write.[16]
