Martin Wise Goodman
Martin Wise Goodman (Jan 15, 1935 – Dec. 20, 1981) [1] was a Canadian journalist known best for his commitment to Canadian journalism, a deep love of country, promoting Canadian awareness and national unity. He joined Toronto Star Newspapers Ltd. in 1958 as a reporter, becoming Editor-In-Chief (1971) and then president (1978–81) List of editors-in-chief of the largest newspapers in Canada. He was also president of Canadian Press (1980) and a member of the American Newspaper Publishers Association. Raised in Montreal, Goodman received a B.Sc. from McGill University and M.Sc from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism. He was a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University in the class of 1962. In 1980 Goodman was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and died in Toronto on December 20, 1981, age 46. In honour of his accomplishments, his family created the Martin Wise Goodman Trust [2] [3], a publicly subscribed permanent endowment, sending Canadian Journalists to Harvard University under the Nieman Fellowship program [4]. Before his death Goodman was awarded the Order of Canada (1981) [5] for his outstanding contributions to Canadian journalism, Columbia University’s Journalism Alumni Award (1981) [6], and an Honorary Doctor of Laws from King's College Halifax (1981). He was inducted into the Canadian News Hall of Fame posthumously in 1982. In 1984 The Toronto Star gifted the city of Toronto for its sesquicentennial a 56 km multi-use trail along Toronto’s waterfront named the Martin Goodman Trail.
