Martyn Roberts is an award-winning New Zealand theatre lighting and set designer, theatre manager and producer.
Background[edit]
Martyn Roberts was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1966. He has a BA (Victoria University of Wellington) and an MFA (University of Otago).[1]
Career[edit]
Roberts is a Professional Practice Fellow in the School of Performing Arts, University of Otago, where he teaches within the programme, and is also the Theatre Manager of Allen Hall.[1]
He founded the theatre company afterburner in 2001, a collective of NZ designers, artists and performers who create new works for theatre, dance, art, installations and galleries.[2]
He is currently the chair of Wow! Productions in Dunedin.[3]
One of Roberts' most successful creations is Dark Matter (2016), a light and performance installation that pushes the boundaries of seeing. "Using low level light, projection and sound, it awakens the possibilities of the unseen, imagining realms beyond sight, just on the verge of seeing."[4] As one reviewer noted: "Dark Matter is a brave and spellbinding sequence of ‘visual haiku’ that make lightness and darkness into solid, tangible media."[5] In 2019, Roberts took a version of the work to the Prague Quadrennial.[6] The project is discussed in detail in "Transforming the Dark: Using Colour to Compose Sound in Dark Matter".[7]
