Marvin Jackson (1936 in Cadet, Missouri[1]21. March 2022) was an American Country-Singer and Songwriter who is known today for the addition of his song "Dippin' Snuff" to the Soundtrack of the popular videogame "Grand Theft Auto V."

Biography[edit]

Marvin grew up in Potosi, Cadet, Missouri. He has been playing the guitar since the age of 14 and often played as lead guitar for other singers at school gigs and local dances. Initially, he worked at the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation, but for the longest time, later, as a miner in a lead mine belonging to the St. Joe Minerals Corporation.

His first three records were recorded in 1957 and distributed through his "made-up" label, Mar-Lee Records. At this time, the singles "Honey If You Love Me"/"World Of Make Believe" and later "My Cryin' Heart"/"Someday You'll Be Sorry" were formed. These two, however, weren't pressed by him personally but by Starday Records in Madison, Tennessee. The third single, named "Peek-A-Boo"/"You Gotta Have The Beat," was pressed by King Records in Cincinnati, Ohio.

In the summer of 1958, Jackson was drafted into the US Army and completed his advanced training at Fort Hood, Texas, before being stationed in Germany. He was released from active duty in November 1960 and returned to work in his home state for the McDonnell Aircraft Corporation. During the time of the Berlin crisis in 1961, he was called back into service.

His rockabilly song "Gee Whiz Miss Liz" caught the attention of the Dutch record label "White Label," after which the company pressed a record with many of his rockabilly-style songs. The same tune also made it onto the "Rock-A-Billy Cowboys" CD box set, where Jackson's songs can be heard alongside those of artists such as Marty Robbins and Johnny Cash.

Marvin wrote his probably best-known song, "Dippin' Snuff," in 1971. At the time, he was working in the Viburnum lead mine. Jackson was inspired to write this song because of the new trend of chewing snuff instead of snuffing it. In 1973 he recorded the song in Farmington, Missouri, at Ray Elder's studio. However, the record label in the Netherlands didn't seem too keen on the song as it was leaning towards the hillbilly sub-genre of country music.

In 2004, Collector Records collected all of Marvin Jackson's songs and released them in one package called "When You Rock and Roll."

In December 2012, Rockstar Games contacted Jackson after they heard his song "Dippin' Snuff" on YouTube. Now you can listen to his tune on the virtual radio station "Rebel Radio" from the hit video game Grand Theft Auto V. His song plays alongside The Highwaymen's "Highway Man", Ray Price's "Crazy Arms", Tammy Wynette's "D-I-V-O-R-C-E", Charlie Feather's "Get With It", and hear Homer and Jethro's "She Made Toothpicks (of the Timber of my Heart)".

Marvin spent his retirement recording his own CDs and singing karaoke.[2]
