Mary-Ellen Nesi is a Greek coloratura mezzo-soprano. She was born in Montreal, Canada of Greek parents. She has performed baroque, classical and belcanto roles in major venues worldwide and has recorded extensively in this repertoire.

Education and singing career[edit]

Mary-Ellen Nesi was born in Montreal of Greek parents who enjoyed classical music, she started ballet at 4 and piano at 6. From the age of 5 she was raised in Greece (Corinth). She studied singing with Misa Ikeuchi in Athens, graduating with distinction from the Kodaly Conservatory of Athens. She also attended masterclasses with Ernst Haefliger in Zurich, and took vocal lessons from Frangiskos Voutsinos and Kostas Paskalis. She debuted as Dorabella at the Athens Concert Hall (Megaron). Her breakthrough role was Antiope in Vivaldi’s Ercole su’l Termodonte in Spoleto-Festival de due mondi under Alan Curtis. This performance launched her international career. She has performed the title roles in Carmen [1] and Cenerentola[2], Oktavian (Der Rosenkavalier), Charlotte (Werther)[3], Romeo (I Capuleti e i Montecchi)[4], Rosina (Il Barbiere di Siviglia)[5], Dorabella (Cosi Fan Tutte), Cherubino (Le Nozze di Figaro), Sifare (Mitridate)[6], Giovanna Seymour (Anna Bolena), Adalgisa (Norma), Ramiro ( La Finta Giardiniera), Hansel (Hansel und Gretel). Nesi particularly distinguished herself in principal roles in baroque operas by Monteverdi, Handel, Vivaldi. Porpora, Hasse, A. and D. Scarlatti, Pergolesi and Paisiello, and in operas by contemporary composers. She has worked with conductors René Jacobs, Ivor Bolton, Alan Curtis, Ottavio Dantone, George Petrou, Charles Dutoit, Bruno Weil, Frans Brüggen, Julia Jones, Teodor Currentzis, Diego Fasolis, Andrea Marcon, Jean-Christophe Spinosi, Federico Maria Sardelli, Emmanuelle Haim, Stephen Stubbs, Paul O'Dette, J. Reilly Lewis, Ruben Dubrovsky. Nesi’s extensive list of performance credits include appearances at the Bayerisches Staatsoper[7], the Frankfurt Oper, the Dresden Semperoper, the Theater des Champs-Elysees, the Royal Opera at Covent Garden (Linbury Studio)[8], the Theater an der Wien, the Operas of Bologna, Ferrara, Versailles[9], Lausanne [10],Nice, Strasbourg [11] , Lisbon and venues such as the Carnegie Hall[12] and Avery Fisher Hall in New York City, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall in Moscow, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw[13], the Brussels Bozar[14], the Montreal Place-des-Arts, the Toronto Koerner Hall[15], the Chungmu Art Hall in Seoul .

Her role as the hero in Handel's Serse was her first baroque role, and she continues to expand her repertoire, which currently includes more than 30 roles.
