Mary Anne Moser is a Canadian entrepreneur and leader in the non-profit and science communication sectors. She has founded and co-founded several initiatives that connect science, art, and public engagement, and has been recognized for her work in Canadian culture and science communication.
Early life and education
Mary Anne Moser was born and raised near Toronto, Canada. She pursued higher education at the University of Calgary, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Zoology, a Master's degree in Communications on Scientific Uncertainty in the Media, and an interdisciplinary PhD. Her doctoral research explored the role of computers in Calgary's homeless shelters. She is the mother of triplets.
Career
Banff Centre initiatives
In 1995, Moser founded the Banff Centre Press[1], a publishing initiative that produced works focused on interdisciplinary themes. In 2005, she created the Banff Science Communications Program[2], which she directed for ten years. This program designed to develop the communication skills of scientists and support public engagement with science.
Beakerhead
In 2011, Moser co-founded Beakerhead[3], an art, science, and engineering spectacle based in Calgary, alongside science broadcaster Jay Ingram[4][circular reference]. Under her leadership as President from 2013 to 2019, Beakerhead became Calgary's second-largest annual festival, combining elements of creativity and science to attract a wide range of participants.
Telus Spark Science Centre
In 2019, Moser was appointed President and Chief Executive Officer of Telus Spark Science Centre in Calgary[5]. During her tenure, the organization received several awards, including the 2021 Canadian Museums Association's Award for Outstanding Achievement in Outreach[6], the 2022 Roy L. Schafer Leading Edge Award for Community Service from the Association of Science-Technology Centers[7], and a 2022 International Association of Amusement Parks and Attractions (IAAPA) Award[8]. She stepped down from this role in 2023.
Recent initiatives
In early 2023, Moser launched Global Partners in Science Communications, an initiative focused on fostering international collaboration in science communication.[9] In 2024, she was named the inaugural Science-Communicator-in-Residence at the University of Calgary.[10]
