From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mary Anne Schwalbe (nee Goldsmith) (born March 31, 1934; died: September 14, 2009)

Professionally, Schwalbe worked at Radcliffe and subsequently at Harvard University, but it is the work she did after this that is even more notable.

Schwalbe was a supporter of the refugee cause, first in Thailand and then Afghanistan. She was involved with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and founded the Women's Commission for Refugee Women and Children, now known as the Women’s Refugee Commission for which she was the founding director. During this time she also executed the role of an electoral observer in the Balkans.

She was the force behind fund raising for a library in Kabul and travelling libraries for Afghanistan.

Schwalbe’s life and works are memorialized in her son, Will Schwalbe’s book, "The End of Your Life Book Club" in which Mary Anne and Will solidified their bonds through a shared love of books while Mary Anne was going through treatment for pancreatic cancer.
