Mary Nnenna Njoku (also known as Mary Remmy or Mary Remmy Njoku, born March 20, 1985) is a Nigerian actress, filmmaker and producer from Lagos, Nigeria. She is also the CEO of Rok Studios, a Nigerian film production studios, and is a dominant figure in the Nigerian TV and film industry.

She has produced and starred in numerous movies and TV series such as Thy Will be Done, Single Ladies, Festac Town and Husbands of Lagos.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Mary Njoku, who is the sixth child in her family of 8, was born in Amuwo Odofin, Lagos, Nigeria and is originally from Nsukka, Enugu State.[1] She attended Amuwo Odofin High School, National College Bagada and Navy Town Secondary School; Njoku also holds a diploma in Computer Science. From childhood, she had a passion for acting and started acting on-stage when she was in Secondary school. Njoku joined the Nollywood industry in 2003, at the age of 17.[2]

From 2010, Njoku attended Lagos State University where she studied for a degree in English Language. In 2012, Njoku attended London Film Academy in the UK where she did a course on Producing: Movie Magic Budgeting & Schedule.

Career[edit]

Njoku made her acting debut in the 2004 Nollywood movie 'Home Sickness', which she featured alongside with Chioma Chukwuka Akpotha. She came to limelight after featuring in popular Nollywood blockbuster 'Blackberry Babes' in 2011.[3]

Between 2011 and 2013, Njoku produced iROKtv, a YouTube platform that featured interviews with Nigerian celebrities, as well as coverage of Afrobeats and Nollywood events. In 2015, Njoku became Chief Content Officer at IROKO Partners; her role included acquisitioning, scheduling, producing and overseeing content partnerships. By March, she held her first world premier for her film Thy Will Be Done at the BFI IMAX London, the first ever Nollywood film premiere in IMAX.[4]

As an executive producer, Njoku has collaborated with other African production companies, including Denziot, Royal Arts Academy, Magic Movies, Divine Touch, Venus Films and over fifty more.

Rok Studios[edit]

In August 2013, Njoku founded Rok Studios, the award-winning Nigerian film studio and entertainment brand. Since its launch, ROK Studios has produced some of Nollywood's most talked about originals, including Festac Town, Single Ladies,[5] Body language, Losing Control and Husbands of Lagos.[6]

In 2016, Njoku launched Rok on Sky,[7] a network airing across the UK. To celebrate the launch, over 30 of her Nollywood colleagues flew to London to attend the launch gala which took place by the Nigerian High Commission in the UK.[8] Njoku also launched Rok on DSTV, a network airing across Africa, in the same year.[9][10]

Spark[edit]

In August 2013, alongside her business partners Jason Njoku and Bastian Gotter, Njoku launched a $2 million investment vehicle for Lagos-based Internet start-ups called Spark.[11] The company initially invested in 11 companies, including a real-estate and property online letting agency called ToLet.com.ng, and a hotel room booking site, called Hotels.ng, which both has gone on to raise $1.2 million each in VC investment from EchoVC Pan-Africa Fund and Omidyar Network.

Personal life[edit]

Mary Njoku married British-born Nigerian entrepreneur, film magnate and African start-up investor, Jason Njoku, in Festac, Lagos on 18 August 2012, in front of family, friends and her Nollywood colleagues. They welcomed their first son, Jason Obinna Njoku, on 30 July 2013, a second child Nwakaego Annabelle Njoku, was born on 24 August 2015 and they recently welcomed their third, Amber Nnenna Njoku on 4th August 2017.[12]
