Mary Susan Barr (July 17, 1879 – October 11, 1935) was the only surviving daughter of American outlaw Jesse Woodson James. Her mother was Zerelda, Jesse James' wife and first cousin. Mary was the youngest of four children, Jesse "Tim" James, Jr. (1875–1951) and twin boys, Gould and Montgomery (1878–1878), who were stillborn. Mary was known as Mary Howard as her parents used the aliases of Thomas and Josie Howard. Upon Jesse Sr.'s death on April 3, 1882, Mary became Mary James. She was nearly three years old when her father was shot in her home. Zerelda, Jesse, Jr., and Mary moved to Kansas City, Missouri to the home of Zerelda's brother.
Personal life
On March 6, 1901, Mary married Henry Lafayette Barr (1867–1935). They had four children: Lawrence Henry Barr (1902–1984); Forster Ray Barr (1904–1977); Chester Arthur Barr (1907–1984); and Henrietta Barr (1913–1913) who died as an infant.
For the majority of their married life, Henry and Mary lived just south of the farm of her grandmother, Zerelda James, in Kearney, Missouri. Later, the family moved to Excelsior Springs, Missouri near a church at Mt. Olivet Cemetery. It was Mary's desire that her sons attend high school in Excelsior Springs as the education system was better than in Kearney. According to Mary's obituary, she was a devout Methodist and was active in the church missionary society.
Mary James Barr died on October 11, 1935, at the age of 56 in Kansas City, Missouri. Her husband had died four months earlier on June 16, 1935. According to family members, Mary did not discuss her father, Jesse James. She is buried in Fairview Cemetery, Kearney, Missouri.
