Mary Maclachlan (born 10 June 1953) is an English artist involved with movie and TV miniatures and bigatures.
Early life
Mary was born in England, then emigrated to New Zealand in 1973. Mary's first artistic job was working for Lyle Publications, Worthing, doing pen and ink illustrations of antiques and follies. When her family emigrated to New Zealand, she continued to use her skills as an illustrator doing newspaper advertising and product illustrations for 4 years. Mary created her own business - Pakuranga Art Studio from 1980–89 before starting her behind-the-screen career (1983–1997) on one-off television commercials, set dressing and special effects, working for the art director or production designer with tight deadlines. Throughout the 80s Mary did work on short contracts for television commercials – creating moving models, static effects, and sculptures for various campaigns. Mary still took commissions for visuals and finished work for a wide variety of printed materials including packaging, menus, layouts, and advertising and ran model displays and other club activities in between. She also worked on a number of productions between 1983 to 1997 using her art skills in the area of set dressing, special effects and prop creation. Mary was usually working for an Art Director or Production Designer with very tight deadlines.
Career
The first television show Mary freelanced on was Children of the Dog Star (1984) where she made spaceships. Mary went on to work on Hercules (1994) – including the movies Hercules and the Amazon Women (1994), Hercules and the Lost Kingdom (1994) plus Hercules The Legendary Journeys (season one) (1995) television series where she was responsible for the whole props making department and was there for the pilot episode and all the first season. When she moved from Auckland to Wellington, or Wellywood, as it came to be known locally, Mary did computer graphics for the Enid Blyton Adventure Series (1996) for Cloud Nine, as well as storyboarding, props, and set dressing for five months. Mary also spent 3 months working on The Climb (1997) for Isambard (Auckland), then six weeks on Tidal Wave - No Escape (1997) for WETA FX in Wellington plus Oscar and Friends (1995/96) in Petone. Along the way she gained a diploma of Photographic Art Film Major through Whitecliffe, took part in the organization of lots of model shows for the Science Fiction Modellers club, won some competition awards for models she’d built, took part in the building of a life-size, fully functioning set of the Original Star Trek Enterprise bridge – complete with a replica of Captain Kirk's chair and ran her own Space Station Museum for a while (where she first met Richard Taylor and Peter Jackson). Mary commenced work on Lord of the Rings[1] in 1998/99 with Weta Workshop and continued on for the whole project as Senior Modelmaker (alongside John Baster)[2] until 2001. Mary remained to sculpt LOTR collectibles for WETA/Sideshow Toys (2003/04), create different scale boats for Master & Commander (2003), work on the Peter Jackson project King Kong (2005), build trains for Legend of Zorro (2005) and some early work on the first Narnia film - The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe (released 2008).
