The Masaf rifle (Persian from Arabic : مصاف) is an Iranian battle rifle derived from AR-10 and AR-15. The design is similar to the HK416 and HK417 series made by Heckler & Koch. The State Defense Industries Organization (DIO) of Iran presented the 7.62×51mm self-loading battle rifle on 15 March 2021.[1] The first variant of the Masaf rifle uses a 5.56×45mm NATO cartridge.[2]
History[edit]
The earlier design of the Masaf rifle emerged in 2016, with limited quantities of supplies for the special forces of the Iranian army. Because the chamber is only fit for a 5.56×45mm NATO, the State Defense Industries Organization (DIO) of Iran decided to manufacture the second variant of the Masaf rifle, which chambered a 7.62×51mm cartridge.[3]
Design[edit]
The Masaf rifle’s system is powered by indirect pressure of gunpowder gas and bullets. This system boosts the weapon’s reliability and the life of its fragile parts. The weapon may fire in semi-automatic or burst mode.[4] This rifle uses the 7.62×51 mm round and is cooled by air[5]
The Masaf was developed as an AR-style marksman rifle chambered for heavy ammo. The foregrip concealing the barrel assembly includes only top and bottom rails for accessories (such as a detachable vertical grip). The 17-inch barrel features a three-prong muzzle brake. The front and rear iron sights are not positioned like the HK417. The front sight is mounted above the rectangular gas block, and the rear sight is mounted on the rails above the charging handle.[6]
