Mashal Waqar (born January 1, 1995) is a media and tech entrepreneur and disability rights advocate. She is the co-founder and COO of The Tempest, an internet media company. At 24 years old, Waqar became the youngest South Asian woman to land on the Forbes 30 Under 30 in the Middle East edition.[1]

Biography[edit]

Mashal Waqar was born in Saudi Arabia to Pakistani parents, and is the oldest of three children.

Waqar holds a Bachelor of Science (BS) degree from the Rochester Institute of Technology, with a major in computing security.[2]

She divides her time between Washington, D.C.; Dubai, United Arab Emirates; and Toronto, Canada.


Career[edit]

In 2016, Waqar began her media career at the Washington, DC-based company, The Tempest. She quickly rose through the ranks for her work on accessibility advocacy and in 2017 after her fellowship, i was approached by founder and CEO, Laila Alawa, to serve as co-founder and COO of the company.[3]

In 2017, Waqar gave a TED Talk on cyberbullying, social media, and women's efforts to combat trolling.[4] In 2017, she worked on a UNHRD project to help children in crisis, approaching it from a behavioral and neuroscience perspective[5]. Waqar is a startup mentor at Techstars Startup Weekend, Sharjah Entrepreneurship Center (Sheraa), and StartAD.[6]

Honors and Awards[edit]

In 2019, she was recognized as a Forbes 30 Under 30.[1]

In 2017, Waqar was named the Young Leader of the Year at the 19th Annual Global WIL Economic Forum.[7]
