Mashasha Warqe
Mashasha Warqe [note 1] (born ca. 1849 - died 1917) was an important political figure serving in various roles as an advisor, governor and diplomat during the reigns of Emperors Tewodros II, Yohannes IV and Menelik II.
Biography
Background
Hailing from Gondar, Mashasha was of Amhara descent. His father, Warqe was a high court judge (Afe Negus) under Emperor Tewodros II.[1]
Career
Mashasha began his career at the court of Tewodros II at Magdala.[2]
Mashasha was among those who helped Menelik II to escape from captivity at Magdala in 1865. Not long thereafter, Mashasha fled to Shewa while being pursued by Tewodros's soldiers. Mashasha managed to escape and join Menelik's court.[1][2]
