Massoud Vosough is an Iranian physician and researcher specializing in regenerative medicine, stem cell biology, cancer immunotherapy, and liver diseases. He is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the Royan Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine in Tehran, where he heads the Department of Regenerative Medicine.

Early life and education

Massoud Vosough is a graduate of general biology from Kamal High School in Tehran, Iran. He earned his MD from Tehran University of Medical Sciences. He completed a joint PhD program in biomedical research at the Pasteur Institute of Iran and the Royan Institute in Tehran (2008–2013). He undertook two postdoctoral fellowships in cell transplantation and regenerative medicine at Karolinska Institute in Sweden (2013–2016).[1][2]

Career

At the Royan Institute [3], Massoud serves as an Associate Professor of Medicine and Head of the Regenerative Medicine Department. He has been a senior associate researcher at the Karolinska Institute [4] since 2013. In 2023, he was appointed chairman of the National Board in Applied Cell Science at Iran’s Ministry of Health and Medical Education. He holds visiting professorships at the Institute of Regenerative Medicine at First Moscow Medical University (since 2019) and at Maranatha Christian University in Indonesia (since 2024). Massoud Vosough became an adjunct professor at Tehran University of Medical Sciences in 2025.

He has been an organizer and instructor of regenerative medicine courses in Iran, Russia, Sweden, Germany, and Indonesia, supervised national and international graduate students, and contributed to fellowship programs and advanced training courses. In translational and regulatory work, he served as Deputy Director for Quality and Regulatory Affairs at Cell Tech Pharmed Company (2016–2025), where he registered the first national advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMPs) in Iran.[5][6][7][8]

Research

Massoud Vosough’s research spans liver regenerative medicine, including bioengineered liver organoids for drug screening and disease modeling, stem/progenitor cell-based approaches to liver fibrosis and cirrhosis, and immunotherapy using differentiation therapy in gastrointestinal and liver cancers[9]. Additional areas include regenerative medicine for inflammatory bowel diseases, pluripotent stem cell biology and reprogramming, and production of ATMPs. He has co-authored numerous peer-reviewed publications in hepatology, pharmacology, and cell biology journals.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16]
