Master 200 Meter
Dragon Boat World Record - Senior/Master 200 Meter is a list of record of Dragon Boat, a sport of the modern era that has grown to involve over 50 million athletes and more than 1 billion fans world-wide[1] Characterized by large teams of synchronized athletes paddling in boats adorned with the head and tail of a dragon[2], the sport has transitioned from ancient origins in 3rd century BCE China/South-East Asia[3] to a global scale that includes 73 nations today.[4] The sport's characteristic diversity allows for athletes of virtually any type and aged between early teens to near centenarian.[5][6] Dragon Boat is one of six national holidays in China observed annually during summer season on the 5th day of 5th lunar month.[7]

The current Dragon Boat 200 Meter Senior/Master level world record fastest time is 42.221 sec[8] held by the Canadian National Team, with honorable mentions to the Thailand National Team (42.728 sec[8]) and the USA National Team (42.995 sec[8]) for all three breaking the previous world record simultaneously. The breaking/setting of the recent World Record occurred in the IDBF Dragon Boat World Championships on August 24, 2019 held in Pattaya Thailand[9]. The previous world record was 43.160 sec[10] set by the Russian club team Tigers of Vladivostok in the ICF Dragon Boat Club Crew World Championships on July 20, 2011 in Toronto Canada[11]. The 200M Senior/Master world record was first set at 44.660 sec[12] by the Canadian National Team at the 2003 IDBF Dragon Boat World Championships, held on October 20, 2004*[13] in Shanghai China.

Setting or breaking a Dragon Boat World Record is considerably more challenging than achieving a victory in any particular race event, as per definition.[14] The difference stands out in contrast with respect to the following attributes: 1) Teams are not only undertaking competitors in their respective heat, but in every top heat from everywhere in the world that has ever run.[15] 2) The bar is never reset to zero when the next heat starts; rather, it is only set higher and higher.[16] 3) It is strictly winner takes all; unless multiple competitors achieve the exact same record result at the same time, only one will emerge as setting the world record.[17]
The world record has one mildly-forgiving caveat: while only one team can set the record, there can be more than one that breaks the record. This only happens in the instance that multiple competitors break the previous record simultaneously, and the transformation to a new record is still in a gray area of transition.[18] The history of the Dragon Boat Senior/Master 200 Meter world record has currently spanned 15 years since it's initial setting in the 2003[19] IDBF World Championships (which were actually held in 2004). Throughout those 15 years it has seen 3 turnovers: 2007[20], 2011[10], and 2019[8]. When broken down further, the 200M Senior/Master world record has been set four times and broken five times throughout its 15 year history, since and including its inception.
The 2019 Dragon Boat World Championships race was the largest Dragon Boat World Nations Championships held to date[21]. Over 2700 gold medals were given out, summing up to the highest total golds given in any World Nations Championship[22]. While all past events are still pending analysis, at least 3 world records were broken which tallies to the most broken world records of any Dragon Boat competition[23]. The rare event of multiple teams breaking the world record happened in the Senior-A Open 200 Meter Grand Final on August 24, 2019, which included the 5 top finalists teams of Germany, Hong Kong China, Canada, Thailand, and the USA. All three top finishing teams achieved times that broke the previous world record of 43.160 sec which had held since 2011[24].[ratification 1]

The largest World Governing Body of the sport of Dragon Boat is the International Dragon Boat Federation[25](IDBF) which is devoted solely to Dragon Boat sport. The second largest is the International Canoe Federation[26] (ICF) which includes Dragon Boat among several paddle sports it governs, and there are also some independent organizations which administer events periodically. Within all governing bodies, the sport of Dragon Boat has many divisions, classes, and distance challenges, some of which may differ across the various organizations that host competition events. While about a dozen race distances exist, the most common to sports governing bodies worldwide are the 200 and 500 Meter, followed by 1000 and 2000 Meter[27]. The common classes are Open/Men's, Women's, and Mixed Genders[28]. Common divisions (sometimes with name variations based on which Federation is running the event) include Junior, Premier/Senior, and Senior/Master[29], several of which are further subdivided. All divisions, classes, and distances may be contested in small boats sized for up to 10 paddlers or standard sized for 20 paddlers (plus one steer and one drummer)[30], yet even variations of these sizes are known to exist[31]. Each of these subsets may also rightly claim their own world record times for all race distances within their various sub-divisions. This particular article focuses only on the 200 Meter Senior/Master overall world record (fastest 200M time for all governing bodies, classes, divisions, and sub-divisions at the Senior/Master level).
Criteria And Conditions For Qualifying 200 Meter Senior/Master Dragon Boat Fastest Times Events
- 1) Event must be international with at least 2 different nations competing[32] (prevent national bias)
- 2) Event must be sanctioned by official international race governing organization[33] (impartial international organization)
- 3) Event must be an official Championships race, not independent/recreational/community[34] (prevent local bias)
- 4) Venue must be flat-water[35] (no rivers, open ocean, tidal, moving water)
- 5) Venue must provide adequate event course, conditions, and competition equipment[36]
- 6) Extreme weather conditions (if known) may cause event ineligibility[37]
- 7) All Senior/Master divisions, sub-divisions, and classes included:[38]
- Past Divisions: Senior, Master, Grande (all genders/categories)
- Present Divisions: Senior A, B, and C (open, women, & mixed), Master 40+, 50+ (men, women, & mixed)
There are numerous qualifying sports events that satisfy the conditions to display a world record making race. Some of these host Dragon Boat competition regularly, and others have done so periodically or are still pending inclusion of Dragon Boat into future sports agenda. To list fastest times, each of these competitions has been analyzed on each year they were held, with the aim of determining 1) if they hosted a Dragon Boat event that year, 2) if so, did they have Senior/Master levels 200M races meeting the above listed criteria/conditions, 3) if so, then what were the fastest results. All fastest results historically are then compared to determine the fastest times throughout history and past/present world records.

Ratification Details
- ↑ As there are currently multiple Sports Governing Bodies with authority to ratify fastest Dragon Boat competition times in the same distance races, this article focuses on the top times for all legitimate governing bodies compared together. Note: the fact that multiple legitimate organizations exist with sometimes differing rules also may put ratification criterion into question, and while all results here are legitimate they may in time be subject to changing parameters. Specifically this article details the Dragon Boat 200 Meter distance fastest times across all governing bodies, classes, divisions, and sub-divisions at the Senior/Master level. Other articles may present world records in other distance races (including the 500 Meter, 1000 Meter, and 2000 Meter), and for other categories (including Junior, Premier/Senior, or Senior/Master)
