Master ad Vitam

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Master ad Vitam (Master for Life) is the name of the 20th Degree in the Northern Masonic Jurisdiction of the Scottish Rite.

Background[edit]

The current version of the 20th degree, adopted in 1922,[1] takes the form of a drama that is a work of historical fiction[2] in which Benedict Arnold returns to America to seek absolution from George Washington.[3] The degree teaches that " Treason is a crime over which Freemasonry casts no mantle of charity."[4][5]

All degrees in the Scottish Rite between 19 and 32 are considered part of the consistory, and generally have settings within the past 500 years.[6]

While the current version of Master ad Vitam was created in 1922, the theme of treason first appears in the 1896 version of the degree involving treason against King Frederick of Prussia. The name "Master ad Vitam" is taken from a degree first created by Albert Pike in 1866 with an all-together different plot and theme.[7]
