Matas Vaitkus (born 6 September 2000) is a Lithuanian basketball player for Neptūnas Klaipėda of the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL).[1] He is also an alumni of Vladas Knašius Basketball School.
Early Years and Youth Career
Matas joined the prestigious Klaipėda's Basketball academy (VKKM) at the young age of 7. In the 2016-17 season, alongside Rokas Jokubaitis and the team, he became U17 MKL champions.[2] Vaitkus averaged 10.6 PTS, 3.8 RBS, and 2.6 AST [3]. The following season at the academy, he started competing at a semi-pro level and represented Neptūnas-2 in the 3rd Lithuanian Division RKL where he averaged 16.5 PTS, 3.1 STL, and 2.3 AST. [4].
Professional career
Vaitkus started his professional career signing with Neptūnas Klaipėda in 2019. His first two professional seasons he spent at Neptūnas-Akvaservis, which competes in the 2nd Lithuanian League NKL. [5] After a great 2020-21 season with Neptūnas Akvaservis, on 13 September 2021, Vaitkus was invited to the main Klaipėda's team Neptūnas Klaipėda[6] where he had a successful beginning to the season. Head Coach at the time, Tomas Gaidamavičius, praised Matas for achieving the second highest game efficiency result in the team on his first game. [7]. Vaitkus competed in the 21-22 season on a double license in the 1st and 2nd Lithuanian Divisions, which attracted some media attention as he occasionally had two games in a day. [8]
National team career
Vaitkus competed at FIBA Under-19 Basketball World Cup in 2019, resulting in Lithuania U19 National Team finishing in 4th place, and averaged 1.3 points, 1.0 assists and 5.5 minutes in 6 games.[9]
