From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Mathew Weir, born in Ipswich, England in 1977, is an English artist.[1] He studied at the Royal College of Art, London.[2]

Work

Weir is best known for fusing imagery of ceramic figurines with his archive of landscapes to create complex narratives with exquisite yet melancholic auras.[3]

He has said that both his paintings and sculptures "formulate visual ideas where words or language may fail, or seem insufficient".[4]

By using fragments of pre-existing imagery to make his oil paintings, he draws on a specific tradition of 18th and 19th-century decorative art, like the ceramic figurine, as well as more culturally loaded objects.[5]

Weir's paintings often reference the excesses of death-obsessed, overwrought Victoriana, with red-faced Victorians and peculiar penitents rising up from among the writhing foliage.[6]
