M. Mathialagan (born 13 March 1975), full name Mathialagan Muniandy, is a Malaysian Tamil novelist, screenwriter, and film director. His novel Pei Vali Kadigai won the Tan Sri Manickavasagam Book Award in 2020.
Two of his novels made history in Malaysian literature: Nilangkalin Nedungkanakku became the first Malaysian Tamil novel to be translated into English as Topeng – A Nusantara Saga, and Pinaiyilla Kutram became the first Malaysian Tamil novel to be translated into Malay as Sangkar Saksi. Pinaiyilla Kutram was later adapted into a Malaysian Tamil feature film titled Vijay LL.B – The Advocate, which he also directed.
Early life and education
Mathialagan Muniandy was born on 13 March 1975 in Puchong, Selangor, Malaysia. He completed his primary education at SRJK Vivekananda, Petaling Jaya, and his secondary education at Catholic High School, Petaling Jaya. He later pursued the STPM as a private candidate.
He enrolled at ATC Law School but discontinued after one year. He subsequently studied screenplay writing in Bombay, India. After returning to Malaysia, he joined Open University Malaysia for a Bachelor of Education Administration programme, which he later discontinued to pursue a career in literature and film.
