Mathias Heng

Mathias Heng (born February 4th 1966) is a photojournalist and a Leica Camera Instructor currently based in Asia.

Career[edit]

Mathias was born in Singapore, upon graduating, he served as the Senior (Sergent) Photographer in the Intelligence Unit of the Singapore Armed Forces. There, he worked mainly in the South East Asia region doing aerial photography, historical archive, darkroom work and documentary. He was also the official photographer for the Hotel New World Disaster in 1986.

He moved to the United Kingdom in 1989-1990. While he was there, he was a photographer for The Guardian Newspaper where he covered a range of topics from sports, editorial, advertising and photo-documentary. He was also the photographer for Flypost Magazine covering live music and editorial and a contract photographer for China -SEJ (Japan) covering industrial photography, publication projects and location shootings.

In 1991, he moved back to Singapore and was a photographer for the Bohemian publications. His notable fashion clients includes: Nina Ricci, Guy Laroche, Jasper, Estee Lauder, St. Michael's Mark & Spencer and Guess Jeans.

1992 , he moved to Australia to continue his work around the region. Working on assignments such as HIV/AIDS for the Salvation Army and the Victorian Aids Council, Drugs, Johannesburg Prison. He opened the 'Reportage Gallery' in 2003 to share and showcase his love for reportage photography. In 2005, Leica came on board and the Gallery was the first Leica Gallery in Southern Hemisphere.

In 2003, Mathias covered the pre and post war Iraq for Aus Aid, Care Intenational and supplying his images to various magazine through Atlas Press. During the Daylesford Foto Biennale in 2005, Mathias was a guest speaker on Photo Documentary.

He was a lecturer in Singapore's Temasek Polytechnic's Design school in 2008 and was an adjunct lecturer for the Business school in 2012.

He currently conducts private workshops and is a Leica Instructor specializing in the Leica’s M Camera.
