Mathilde Collin, born on April 20, 1989, is a French business leader and head of the California-based company Front—which she founded in 2013 and which became a unicorn in 2022.[1]
Biography
Family and education
Mathilde Marie Anne-Sophie Collin was born on April 20, 1989, in France. Her father was an engineer and her mother an executive assistant; her grandparents were farmers on one side of the family and stonemasons on the other.[2]
After completing a preparatory class at the private Notre-Dame-du-Grandchamp high school in Versailles, she was accepted into every school to which she applied. She chose HEC Paris, majoring in entrepreneurship. During a gap year, she gained experience at the startup Shopcade—where she greatly enjoyed the atmosphere—and in the finance department at Bouygues, where she did not enjoy the work.[3]
She is married to a fiction writer and is a mother of two children; the second was born in January 2023.[4]
She plays tennis and soccer, and engages in rock climbing and cycling.[5]
Professional career
After graduating from HEC Paris in 2012, she worked for nine months at Concord, a contract management startup.[6]
In 2013, with financial backing and advice from entrepreneur Thibaud Elzière, she co-founded Front in Paris with Laurent Perrin, who handled the technology. Front markets a SaaS product that consolidates all messages sent to or received from a contact—regardless of the transmission method (email, SMS, WhatsApp, etc.)—into a single thread. The product integrates with various messaging tools such as Slack, Asana, and Salesforce. Collin initially described it as new email software, but later repositioned it as a "customer communication platform."[7]
The company had five employees when Mathilde Collin decided to relocate it to San Francisco to participate in Y Combinator. Following a Series D funding round in 2022, the company was valued at $1.7 billion, achieving "unicorn" status.[8]
She strives to foster a positive work environment; in 2022, *Fortune* ranked the company 13th on its list of the best medium-sized workplaces. She has even stated that the pursuit of employee happiness was a driving force behind her decision to start the company.[9]
She also invests in other startups, including Loom, Inc., which she backed in 2020.[10]
