Matt "Bubba Kush" Berger (born Matthew Berger, February 10, 1971) is an American cannabis breeder, entrepreneur, and fashion designer. He is widely credited as the creator of the Bubba Kush and OG Kush cannabis strains,[1] and is the founder of BK Brands LLC, which holds the registered trademark for the Bubba Kush Brand.[2]
Early life and education
Berger was born on February 10, 1971, in Wilmington, Delaware.[3] He graduated from Lyman High School in Longwood, Florida, in 1985, and later earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry from the University of Florida in 1995.[3]
Career
Cannabis breeding
While attending the University of Florida in Gainesville in 1992, Berger discovered a unique cannabis phenotype that would later become known as Kush (and eventually OG Kush). In an October 2013 High Times cover story, Berger recounted that the strain originated from seeds found in a bag of cannabis purchased in Miami. He and his friends cultivated the seeds, initially naming the plant "Kush" after a friend's older brother remarked that the buds resembled "kush-berries" from Indonesia, unaware that a strain called Hindu Kush already existed.[1]
Around 1994, Berger developed another strain called "Bubba" using Northern Lights seeds obtained from Humboldt County, California.[1] In 1996, he relocated to Los Angeles, bringing his cannabis genetics with him. It was there that a Kush hermaphrodite pollinated a Bubba plant, creating the Bubba Kush strain—reportedly discovered by associates of the hip-hop group Cypress Hill.[1][3]
Film and fashion
After graduating from the University of Florida, Berger worked as a private clothier in Newport Beach, California, before relocating to Los Angeles to pursue costume design. He joined the Costume Designers Guild (CDG IATSE Local 892) and worked in the film industry from approximately 1997 to 2007, contributing to movies, commercials, and music videos. During this period, he also designed children's clothing lines, including "Woogie World" and "Designer Stains," as well as Alison Eastwood's denim line, "Eastwood Ranch."[3]
Dispensary and consulting
In 2009, Berger moved to Colorado and co-founded The Cannasseur Dispensary, one of the first licensed medical marijuana dispensaries in the state.[3] The dispensary gained recognition for its high-quality cannabis and proprietary genetics, including award-winning strains such as Kurple Fantasy, Kizzle, and Mandarin Kush. The Cannasseur was featured in High Times and won second place for Best Booth at the 2011 High Times Denver Cannabis Cup.[3]
Following the closure of The Cannasseur due to regulatory issues, Berger consulted for cultivation facilities in Colorado and New Jersey, including building grows for Rocky Mountain High. He also managed grows in British Columbia, Canada, for approximately a year and a half before returning to the United States.[3]
Trademark and brand expansion
Berger owns the registered trademark for "BK BUBBA KUSH BRAND" through his company, BK Brands LLC (USPTO Serial Numbers 88691165 and 88691181).[2] He has expressed intentions to expand the Bubba Kush brand into various licensing verticals, including food service, fashion, extreme sports sponsorships, hospitality, and merchandise.[3]
Legacy and cultural impact
Bubba Kush has become one of the most recognized and widely cultivated cannabis strains globally. It has parented numerous descendant strains and remains a staple in both recreational and medical cannabis markets. In 2014, High Times named Bubba Kush the "Number One Strain of All Time."[3] The strain's name has become synonymous with potent indica effects and has been referenced extensively in cannabis culture, music, and media.[1]
According to High Times, "If it wasn't for this crew [Imperial Genetics, associated with Berger], OG Kush wouldn't be where it is today. They sourced the '92 OG from Florida, then brought it to Colorado before taking it to California—where it blew up and has remained a staple strain in most cannabis gardens over 20 years later."[4]
