Matt Cohen (born Oct 11, 1984) is an American podcaster, screenwriter, comic-book writer, comedian, producer and online personality; most notable for his work with Kevin Smith and the early days of SModCo. He was the co-owner, creative director of the SModCastle, the world's first podcasting theater[1] [2]
Early life[edit]
Matt grew up in Syosset, New York, and attended colleges in New York City and Burlington, Vermont. After living in Manhattan and being involved in the improv community through the Upright Citizens Brigade, Matt moved to Los Angeles in 2008 to peruse a career in the film business.
Career[edit]
Matt was the creator of the new defunct Smodco network podcasts Bagged & Boarded (the second ever podcast on Kevin Smith's SModCo network), and SMidNight (also SmodCo network). His work in podcasting also involved Cabin Boyz (for the HeadGum network), The Wayback Pod, Back and To The Left, and served as a producer on Kelly Carlin's "Waking from the American Dream" as well as the first producer of Jay Mohr's Mohr Stories.[3]
Matt's film work involves an appearance in the award-winning documentary "The People Vs. George Lucas", and the short films "Wrestling Isn't Wrestling" (Max Landis) and "The Boy Who Couldn't Sleep and Never Had To" (Derrick Comedy) as a producer. He's appeared in viral youtube videos (Animal Battles, Nerdist: All-Star Celebrity Bowling- WWE episode) as well as having made cameos in feature films (Cop-Out, Me, Him, Her, Changeland).[4]
Matt was the co-owner/creative director of the Smodcastle (Los Angeles) with Kevin Smith, where he performed live on a weekly basis.[5]
Matt has written for such websites as Quick Stop Entertainment and Nerdist, and in 2015, successfully "Kick-started" his first graphic novel, "G.E.E.K"[6]
Podcasting[edit]
Matt's first podcast, "Bagged & Boarded", ran from 2008 to 2016 and features a rotating series of co-hosts (Jesse Rivers, Brendan Creecy, Misti Dawn, Shawn Depasquale). In the 8 years the show ran, Matt interviewed various celebrities, such as,
Kevin Smith, Chris Hardwick, Alex Winter, Kevin Eastman, Stan Lee, Deborah Ann Woll, Dan Fogler, Team Unicorn, Tom Green, Jamie Alexander, Robert Kirkman, Aaron Douglas
The podcast was recorded at Matt's apartment, Live (and not live) from the SModcastle in Hollywood, and finally at Golden Apple Comics. [7] [8]
