Matt Hackenburg
Jonathan Matthew (Matt) Hackenburg (born October 18th, 1984) is a computer engineer[1] currently running for Governor of Pennsylvania in the 2022 election.[2] He is the officially nominated candidate of the Libertarian Party of Pennsylvania.[3][4]
Early life and education
Hackenburg was born on October 14, 1984, in Princeton, New Jersey. He attended Rochester Institute of Technology and has an over decade-long career as a computer engineer specializing in aviation.[5][6] He served in the Army National Guard[7] from 2012 to 2016.[8]
Personal life
Hackenburg lives with his wife and their young daughter in Northampton County, Pennsylvania.[9][10][11][12]
Political positions
Defend the Guard
Hackenburg maintains that the National Guard has been abused by forcing deployment into foreign countries without a formal declaration of war. He supports the Defend the Guard movement that would prohibit deployment of any state's National Guard without a formal declaration of war by the United States Congress.[13][14]
Medical autonomy
Hackenburg has stated that the response to COVID-19 sparked his involvement in the libertarian movement.[15] His position as governor would be to end government interference in personal health decisions.[16]
Drug decriminalization
Hackenburg supports drug decriminalization and pardons for those previously convicted of non-violent drug offenses.[17]
Tax policy
Hackenburg maintains that people's hard-earned money should not be taxed and that the very act of taxation equates to theft of the individual.[18][19][20]
Second Amendment
Hackenburg takes a strong stance in support of the Second Amendment, stating that any violation of the natural right to defend oneself should be nullified by the state.[21][22]
State autonomy
Hackenburg believes one of the most important roles of a governor is to protect their state from encroachments from the federal government.[23] He's stated that "All laws coming from corrupt DC that infringe on our rights should be nullified."[24][25]
Elected officials
In an early campaign survey, Hackenburg stated that elected officials too often get caught up in a thirst for power and control. He contends that humility is the most important characteristic an elected official can have, and that protecting the freedoms of their constituents is their most important job.[26]
