Of Italian-Jewish origin, Matt Rubano studied at the prestigious Berklee College of Music. He joined Taking Back Sunday in 2003 to fill the bassist position left by Shaun Cooper. He was recommended by Mark O'Connell, the band's original drummer and Rubano's childhood friend. With Taking Back Sunday he has recorded two albums, Where You Want to Be and Louder Now.
Prior to TBS, Rubano had excelled as a musician playing in experimental bands like Schleigho, which fused acid jazz with funk, performed in the musical Bat Boy, and worked on Lauryn Hill's album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill as a bassist. About that stage of his musical career with the former Fugees leader, he assures that "it was something that for years and years I wanted to do with my life, and I dedicated myself fully to it. I achieved certain things, like that album... I was in New York, and there are plenty of opportunities and work there if you want to play. But when I joined Taking Back Sunday I was completely sick of being a session musician, it didn't fill me at all. It got to the point where I didn't want to play other people's music anymore, I didn't enjoy not having any creative input (...). If you get hired for a recording, you go in, you work with the producer, they send you a check and that's it. Whereas when you're in something for years and years, and you see it growing, developing and changing is a much more rewarding way to spend time."
